I've gone through both Direct Hits and Hot Words, but I keep getting 2-3 sentence completion wrong. I feel as if now I should study Barron's Long List or more word roots (I'm a Latin student) and still have some time till the SAT. What would you suggest? How did you learn vocabulary as a high school student?Well, when I was a high school student I just read. I read A LOT.
On the questions you’re getting wrong, do you fully understand, logically, what the sentence wants? That is, are you able to anticipate exactly what the missing word should mean, but just can’t match that definition to anything in the choices? When you look up the word in the right answer afterwards, is its definition basically exactly what you thought it would be?
Unless you’re answering “yes” to all of the above questions, studying longer word lists is unlikely to help much more. If the answer to any of the above questions is “no,” then you’d be better off practicing your comprehension by spending this summer being a voracious reader.
