The example says that women were drawn to Balzac because of his “penetrating intuition of the female heart.” In other words, they were attracted to him because they thought, based on his writing, that he, like, totally got them. :) Unfortunately, he turned out to be an insensitive jerk, and they were appalled.

In other words, the insight into character that Balzac displayed in his writing was not really evident in his personal life.
